I have a love-hate relationship with Facebook.
One the one hand, I love having news feeds from my favorite sports teams, seeing funny memes from my military veteran pages, seeing all the animal videos, and keeping up with my friends and family.
On the other hand, all the political crap is just outrageous and makes me yearn for the days before the Internet. Yes, kids, there was a time when there was no Internet, no smart phones, no texting, no Snapchat, no digital music – just peace and quiet!
What particular bothers me is all the lying.
We have a president who lies, and the worse part is I actually don’t think he believes he lies!
We have congressmen who have come out in favor of an issue at one time only to change that position 180 degrees when it’s not politically expedient. Most of us in America call that lying.
The media out-and-out lies.
A publisher just published a book that the author admits contains fabrications because it’s great gossip that makes for juicy reading!
And we have people trying to defend the lies! They either defend their favorite liar by pointing out the lies of the opposition, which somehow in their mind makes the lie their guy told okay – the old Two Wrongs Make a Right argument. Or, they justify the lie as necessary to get something good in exchange.
News flash: There is never a right way to do the wrong thing! And lying is wrong.
It’s even in the 10 Commandments – Thou Shall Not Bear False Witness. In other words, don’t lie about people!
Proverbs 12:22 says, “The Lord detests Lying Lips…” God detests YOU when you lie!
John 8:44b tells us that lying come directly from Satan, “When he lies, he speaks his native tongue, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
Revelation 22:15 has a warning for liars, “Outside are the dogs, those who practice magical arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehoods.”
Proverbs 6:15 is where God says lying is an “abomination” to Him!
Proverbs 19:9 is clear, “A false witness will not go unpunished; And he who tells lies shall perish.”
There are a lot more verses in scripture about lying but you get the idea. God hates lying – it is a sin and will count against your blessings if you’re a Christian and will be punished if you are someone who rejects Christ.
So here is my advice – what I like to call Rev. Tom Logic 101: Don’t lie. Don’t fib. Don’t fabricate. Don’t exaggerate. Don’t leave things out that should be in and don’t put things in that should be out. And don’t defend those who do.
Jesus taught us how we should act when he was addressing oaths. In His day, people would make an oath to prove they were telling the truth – kind of like we say idiomatically that we’d “Swear on a Bible” or “I swear on my mother’s grave.” Jesus said these words in Matthew 5:37, “But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.”
