Doing Right vs Doing Good

Last Sunday my pastor made an interesting comment during his sermon that has me thinking. He said that there is a difference between doing right and doing good. Doing right is when you do as God commands while doing good is when you do what society and the world accepts. I thought I’d spend a few minutes just thinking out loud about that this morning.

Doing right means you don’t use abortion as birth control; doing good means you have abortion on demand.

Doing right means you don’t give into every sexual impulse you have; doing good means if it feels good do it.

Doing right means you don’t divorce if at all possible; doing good means you divorce whenever you’re unhappy.

Doing right means you love your neighbor as yourself; doing good means you don’t have to like anyone who disagrees with you.

Doing right means you don’t judge people; doing good means you marginalize people based on their various identities.

Doing right means you serve others; doing good means you serve yourself.

Doing right means you forgive others; doing good means you hold a grudge.

Doing right means you sacrifice for others; doing good means you only sacrifice for those you love.

Doing right means you consider others before yourself; doing good means you are not your brother’s keeper.

Doing right means you pray for your nation’s leadership; doing good means you wish failure upon them.

Doing right means you pay your bills; doing good means you spend beyond your means.

Doing right means you work or don’t eat; doing good means society should support you.

Doing right means you obey the law; doing good means the laws are flexible when it comes your pet issue.

Doing right means you love your enemy; doing good means you attack and try to destroy your enemy.

Doing right means you bear with those who are a challenge to you; doing good means you cut those people out of your life.

Doing right means you spend your resources on others in need; doing good means you make as much money for yourself as possible.

Doing right means you are part of a church family; doing good means you can be spiritual all by yourself.

Doing right means you seek forgiveness when you transgress against someone; doing good means it was probably their fault so they deserve what you did.

Doing right means you humble yourself; doing good means you are prideful.

Doing right means you raise your children to follow God; doing good is you raise your children to be nice, accountable and responsible.

Doing right means you there is one truth – God’s truth; being good means your truth is as good as my truth.

Doing right means you give others grace and mercy even when they have not earned it; being good means you give others no quarter for their foibles and mistakes.

Doing right means you respect others; being good means people have to earn your respect.

Doing right means Jesus is your number one priority; doing good means you are your number one priority.

I could go on and on – it is such a contrast. I’ve honestly lived both ways and I’ll admit being good was good enough for me at one point in my life. But not anymore. Once you get a taste to doing right there is no turning back.

Just a short blog today but one I hope you think about in your own life. Are you doing right or are you doing good? Which will you choose to do?
