It was the Friday of 9/11 week. As America was reeling from the terrorist attacks, I was in Monterey, CA waiting for a phone call. My wife and I were supposed to be in France and Edenborough, Scotland on vacation visiting WWII historical spots. But we were to leave on September 12 so that vacation was canceled and instead we drove to my favorite place in the world – Monterey. It’s where I was stationed while serving in the Army. Attached to Ft. Ord, I was a student that Defense Language Institute where I studied Russian for a year.

Sitting in a hotel room in Monterey that Friday afternoon the phone finally rang. I was told the call was coming sometime that week, but it took ALL week! The caller ID showed a 202-area code – Washington, DC. This was it. The lady at the other end of the phone officially offered me a position as an intelligence officer with the Defense Intelligence Agency within its Russia/Eurasia Division.

Then the adventure began!

I spent just under three years in DC working for DIA that included a short stint at the Pentagon with the Undersecretary of Defense of Intelligence where I was an Executive Assistant for a Deputy Undersecretary. During that time, I learned a TON, including it wasn’t what God wanted me to do!

During a prayer one night when I was thanking God for allowing me to follow my dream of working in Intelligence Community, God responded by saying, “Now that I’ve let you do everything you’ve wanted to do, do you want to do something for me?”

Ouch!

I ended up quitting my dream job, moving back to Oregon and starting seminary. It was time to serve God.

Some years after my DC experience, I was talking with God and He said, “You know, you can use tradecraft to evangelize.”

What?? Use intelligence tradecraft to share Jesus?? Heck yeah – just take out all the manipulative stuff and it would work!!

And thus, you have An Intelligence Officers Guide to Christian Evangelism – a book that teaches you how to use human intelligence (HUMINT) tradecraft to share the Good News anywhere you go! The book has been cleared by the Defense Department so there is no classified information in it. However, you will find information that may be new to you!
